From concept to creation: The DREIECK

Lorenz Noelle (1992, Stuttgart) studied industrial design with a bachelor's degree at the Faculty of Design at Munich University of Applied Sciences. Meanwhile, he was able to gain his first contact with the international furniture industry during his internship at Jehs+Laub in Stuttgart. He then completed a master's degree in product design at écal in Lausanne (CH). There he took part in customer-related projects for two years, which were supervised by, for example, Augustin Scott de Martinville (BIG-Game), Kim Colin (Industrial Facility), Anniina Koivu and Erwan Bouroullec. Since 2021 he has been pursuing projects in various areas of industrial design from everyday objects to furniture design to exhibition projects.

What was the defining moment that led you to industrial design?

I originally come from art. My teacher in high school was a trained industrial designer and, in addition to classical art, she also gave us insight into architecture, sculpture and design. I was particularly impressed by the work of the Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the readymades by Marcel Duchamp and some of the Bauhaus classics.

What inspires you and how did your individual style develop from this?

In projects I search for the essence of the form by reducing it to the essentials. A project usually begins with a dialogue. This is followed by research into the context... many factors can be inspiring. I think at the end of the day, use is one of the best sources of inspiration and often brings a strong aesthetic all by itself.

How did you become aware of our company?

The first contact with dennismaass. I had it in Stuttgart at the “Blickfang” trade fair. I was particularly impressed by the details, shapes and quality of the workmanship. I also noticed the surface structure of the objects, which brings with it a recognizable aesthetic that I had never seen in 3D printed objects before. After the first on-site meeting in Ludwigsburg with the team, it was clear that the chemistry worked well together and a collaboration could begin.

Vases come in countless shapes. But a triangular vase is not commonplace. What inspired you to choose this particular shape?

The triangle is ideal for arranging plants in the corners within the vase. In addition, the geometric side surfaces offer the possibility of placing one vase next to the other vase in order to create different vase compositions. The aim was for the user to be able to decide for themselves how they would like to combine the vases. I think the aesthetics of the design lies in this freedom.

There are six different heights of this vase, all with the same circumference. What makes the different heights in this particular design so fascinating?

The idea of different heights results primarily from the fact that there are plants of different lengths and these only harmonize with a suitably proportioned vase. The same size of the vases ensures cohesion and visual calm. 3ddruck_vase_dreieck.jpg

Aside from the shape, were there any other influences or inspirations that guided you in creating this design?

If you combine several vases together, you get a kind of skyline... I liked that association. Above all, I like the idea that a wide variety of plants grow on the buildings, creating an “urban jungle”.

The path from a design concept to a market-ready product can be full of challenges. How did you experience the process?

I am very happy with the result and am still thrilled with the quality and details in the workmanship. A big part of the process was finding proportions that worked together. The details of the surface structure also took a few attempts before we were satisfied. The collaboration was positive and cooperative, and we motivated each other and were not immediately satisfied with the first attempt.

Is the DREIECK your first vase or have you designed vases before?

The DREIECK collection is my first design of a vase. I am very happy with the concept, execution and aesthetics. Slicer_triangle vasestylish_3d_druck_Vase_zum_individualiseren.jpg

Which combination of the TRIANGLE would you place in your apartment?

I have the vases in different places with different plants... at the moment I have some vases with dahlias on the windowsill, there is a large vase with a dried fan palm leaf from vacation in the hallway, and there are some small vases in the kitchen with fresh parsley and mint. Depending on the season, this will certainly change again.

Thank you, Lorenz. We look forward to realizing even more exciting projects with you in the future. The TRIANGLE is just the beginning!
